Social Teachings of the Catholic Church

Pillar 2: The Call to Family, Community and Participation

Our God is a Trinity, three persons, one God. These three persons are in constant relationship with each other. Being created in the image of God, we too need to be in relationships. Human beings are social. This principle reminds us that when we create social structures we must always do so in a way that protects human dignity. Family is at the center of all community and we need to strengthen family.
Our faith calls us to community in an active way. We have a responsibility to live our values in our social world. We need to stand up for the dignity of all people, especially the poor and the oppressed. When we participate in society we must always make decisions for the common good of society.

from Church Teaching

It is necessary that all participate, each according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person. Participation is achieved first of all by taking charge of areas for which one assumes personal responsibility...As far as possible; citizens should take an active part in public life."  Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nos. 1913-1915

from Scripture

We love because He first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

This is the commandment we have from Him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1 John 4:19-21
